Rodent Problem Inside & Out

A rodent problem can be minor, or it can be a very serious issue to deal with. It depends on what type of rodent you are dealing with and how long they have been hanging around. With any rodent problem, you want to get rid of it as quickly as possible, and make sure they don’t come back.

The word rodent actually encompasses about 40% of the mammal population. That statistic alone almost ensures that at some point and time, you will encounter one. Many people have rodents as pets. Some have pet rats from hamsters to rats or guinea pigs.  Most are on the smaller size and can be as little as 2-½” in length. However, there are much larger rodents that can weigh as much as 100 pounds.  Their survival success can be attributed to their short breeding cycles, and their ability to eat a variety of food. Most rodents are plant eaters, but if you have a mouse in your kitchen, you know they are not picky.  Most mice can fit through a crack as small as 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch in size.

Gophers are a common yard and garden pest. Their tunnel system can be destructive because they will destroy anything in their path. They will gnaw and dig through your sprinkler or irrigation system, and even destroy underground utility lines. If you see gopher activity in your yard, you want to quickly eradicate them. Placing some rodent traps down the gopher holes will help you catch them.  The good thing is that gophers are usually loners, so if you find one, that may be all that you have.

Two other common rodent pests are rats and mice. If you see any activity around your home, you want to get rid of them immediately. They not only carry diseases, but ticks, lice and other insects as well. Placing some Fastrac Blox where you see their activity is a sure fire way to get rid of them. The Blox are all weather, so you can place them outdoors as well, and they are still effective.  Locking rat bait stations are available to increase safety. The type of rodents and the size of the infestation will determine how much rodent bait you will need.
